Soen’s upcoming album “Memorial” is a powerful and dynamic masterpiece that encapsulates the pulse of our modern world. The band skillfully navigates through the tumultuous landscape of contemporary society, infusing each track with an unyielding energy and a profound sense of purpose.
The members of Soen shine brilliantly on this album, each bringing their unique strengths to the forefront. Joel Ekelöf’s vocals soar to incredible heights, delivering heart-wrenching melodies that pierce through the soul. The duality of Lars’ guitar and keyboard work, led by the intricate riffing and atmospheric keys, is a testament to the band’s prowess and commitment to their craft. Martin’s drumming and Zlatoyar’s bass grooves add a driving force that propels the music forward, creating an irresistible rhythmic undertow, while Cody’s guitar leads add an extra layer of depth and texture to the album’s already incredible sonic landscape.
Commencing with the opening track “Sincere”, Soen immediately captivates its audience with its infectious melodies and relentless drive. The lyrics of this song delve into the shallowness of seeking validation through social media and fame, underlining the significance of authenticity and sincerity in contrast to the pursuit of hollow ‘likes’ and societal pressures. It calls for self-respect and meaningful connections while critiquing the confines imposed by a culture fixated on recognition. As we seamlessly move into “Unbreakable”, which exudes a classic metal vibe and explores the concept of breaking self-limitations through unwavering belief, the album already showcases Soen’s exceptional ability to seamlessly merge aggression with beauty. “Violence” further distinguishes itself with its infectious riffs and a message that hits hard, while “Fortress” ensnares listeners with its captivating and mesmerizing guitar leads.
“Hollowed”, featuring Elisa (also featured on Muse’s “Ghosts”), offers a poignant acoustic-driven interlude that tugs at the heartstrings, addressing themes of loneliness and hope. The title track “Memorial” hits hard with searing grooves and poignant lyrics that confront the impact of power-hungry leaders and the scars of senseless wars.
The album continues to surprise with explosive tracks like “Incendiary” and “Icon”, both weaving progressive elements into their sonic tapestry. The song “Icon” takes a poignant stance, serving as a tribute to those who wait in darkness as their loved ones are out at war. The mention of “parading riches they stole” in the lyrics suggests that those in authority may have enriched themselves at the expense of the land and its people. Tracks like “Tragedian” reveal a vulnerable side of Soen, imploring humanity to embrace compassion as the cure for its woes.
The closing track, “Vitals”, is a breathtaking masterpiece, marked not only by Joel’s haunting vocals, incredible writing by Lars and its ethereal and introspective atmosphere. This song invites introspection and deep self-exploration, making it one of Soen’s most beautiful creations to date. The lyrics appear to convey a sense of longing, loss, and a search for solace. The speaker seems to be addressing someone who has passed away or left (“After you’re gone…”) and expresses the desire for that person to somehow communicate their presence or existence. There’s a feeling of being adrift or lost without this person. The recurring theme is the plea for this person to confirm their continued existence (“Just say you’re alive”) and to alleviate the speaker’s pain and uncertainty, which suggests a struggle to cope with emotions and a longing for closure and reassurance.
“Memorial” represents Soen at the pinnacle of their artistry. Following their successful US tour last winter, this album is poised to make a global impact, solidifying Soen’s position as a trailblazing force in the music industry and raising the bar to new heights.
Verdict: 5/5
