Eight years is an eternity in extreme metal—but for Dimmu Borgir, it’s merely the silence before something colossal awakens.

The Norwegian symphonic black metal titans have officially announced their long-awaited new album, Grand Serpent Rising, set for release on May 22 via Nuclear Blast Records. And if the first taste is any indication, this isn’t just a return—it’s a resurrection.

At the center of this rebirth is the band’s newly unveiled single, “Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel,” a towering, cinematic piece sung entirely in Norwegian. Rooted in themes of bloodline, inheritance, and the primal thread that binds generations together, the track is both ferocious and deeply ritualistic—an offering carved from history and drenched in atmosphere.

From its opening moments, “Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel” surges with a sense of ancient gravity. This is Dimmu Borgir operating at their most expansive—layering orchestral majesty over blistering black metal aggression, a balance they’ve spent decades perfecting. It’s not just a song; it’s a declaration that the band’s creative fire has not dimmed during their eight-year absence—it has evolved.

Frontman Shagrath reflects on the journey with a sense of hard-earned pride, noting that Grand Serpent Rising represents the culmination of an intense and demanding creative process. More importantly, he emphasizes that the album draws from every era of the band’s storied career—suggesting a release that is as reflective as it is forward-thinking.

That sentiment is echoed by guitarist Silenoz, who frames the album’s title as both symbolic and prophetic. The serpent, often misinterpreted as a figure of pure evil, becomes something far more complex here: a symbol of renewal, transformation, and knowledge. It’s a fitting metaphor for a band that has consistently shed its skin, evolving with each release while maintaining its core identity. The timing is equally poetic—Grand Serpent Rising was completed as the Year of the Snake drew to a close in early 2026, reinforcing the album’s thematic undercurrent of rebirth.

Recorded in Gothenburg with legendary producer Fredrik Nordström—whose previous work with the band includes genre-defining releases like Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia and Death Cult Armageddon—the album promises a return to the grand, cinematic scale that first elevated Dimmu Borgir into the upper echelon of extreme metal. But this isn’t nostalgia. It’s refinement. Thirteen tracks, each forged to balance brutality and sophistication, make it clear: this is a band not content to relive the past, but to dominate the present.

The album will be available across a wide array of formats, from classic CD jewelcases to an extensive selection of collectible vinyl variants, including exclusive pressings tailored for dedicated fans and collectors. It’s a release designed not just to be heard—but to be owned, displayed, and experienced in full.

And as if the album itself weren’t enough, October 2026 will see Dimmu Borgir bring their renewed fury to the stage. Joining forces with fellow extreme metal giants Behemoth, the band will embark on the In League With Satan co-headline tour across Europe and the UK. With Dark Funeral as special guests, the lineup reads like a manifesto of blackened dominance—three pillars of the genre converging for what promises to be one of the most devastating tours of the year.

With Grand Serpent Rising, Dimmu Borgir are set to reclaim their throne. Eight years of silence has only sharpened their edge, and if Ulvgjeld & Blodsodel is the opening strike, then what follows may very well redefine the band’s legacy.

The serpent has shed its skin.

Now it rises.
